Europe Day，celebrated on 9 May，commemorates the signing of the Schuman Declaration in 1950. This foundational text sets out the visionary idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe，which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable.
This idea laid the ground for the most ambitious regional political project of its time and opened a new era of ever-closer cooperation in Europe，that continued to be developed into what we know today as the European Union of 27 countries.
Belgium was one of the six founding countries of the European project，together with Germany，France，Italy，the Netherlands，and Luxembourg.

Paul-Henri Spaak (1899-1972) was a Belgian politician who supported the development of cooperation and collective security after the Second World War.
In 1955，he was appointed chairman of the "Spaak Committee" that prepared a report on creating a common European market.
Thanks to his work，the signing of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 saw the creation of the European Economic Community，a new supranational format aimed at creating a common market and customs union between European countries.
