6月16日，《牛津英语词典》（Oxford English Dictionary，简称OED）发布了今年第二次的季度更新，里面出现了几个我们感兴趣的中国元素。
OED彻底翻修了spirit，新增的副条目spirit money（字面“鬼魂钱”）吸引了我的注意，直觉或与中华文化有关，键入一查，果真如此。
OED对spirit money所下的定义，理解起来就是我们文化里的“纸钱”：
（在中国和中国语境下的宗教仪式和葬礼）仿造的钱，常以装饰纸制成，是焚烧给（或以他种方式用于）神祇或逝者的祭祀品。依传统信仰，这种钱能安抚神祇，也可供亡魂在来世享用。【(in religious ceremonies and funerals in China and Chinese contexts) imitation money，usually made of decorated paper，which is burnt (or otherwise used) as an offering to a deity or deceased person，in accordance with a traditional belief that the money will appease the deity or be used by the spirit of the deceased in the afterlife.】
OED引用了四条书证（quotation），英英释义牛津词典在线翻译，最新的一条由英国剑桥大学的华人教授周越（Adam Yuet Chau）所贡献，出自他2006年的《灵验》（Miraculous Response）一书：“那堆黄灿灿的纸钱烧得像个篝火”（The pile of bright yellow spirit money burning like a bonfire.）。
spirit money的词源信息指出，读者可径自前往hell money（字面“地狱钱”）处，和粤语的“冥镪”（míhng kéuhng）做比较，并建议另外参见paper money（字面“纸钱”）。这条线索透露，spirit money、hell money、paper money三者密切相关，值得深入了解。
《简明牛津词典》原文名称叫“The Concise Oxford Dictionary”。照这本词典自己解释，Concise是brief but comprenhensive in expression的意思，即“简捷而内容丰富或全面的’的意思，事实上，任何辞典难免有“简而不明”之处。
OED给hell money（冥币）下的定义，与spirit money（纸钱）大同小异：
（在中国和中国语境下）在葬礼上，或在纪念祖先的仪式或节日里，作为祭祀品焚烧的仿造纸钱。依传统信仰，这种钱可供亡魂在来世享用。【(in China and Chinese contexts) imitation paper money burnt as an offering at a funeral，or at a ritual or festival honouring ancestors，in accordance with the traditional belief that it will be used by the spirit of the deceased in the afterlife.】
The New Oxford English-Chinese Dictionary 新牛津英汉双解大词典 例句：1. The 5th edition Oxford English-Chinese Dictionary is much thicker than the 4th one.第五版牛津英汉双解词典比第四版厚得多。2. High 。
“坟上焚烧的数沓冥币有假人民币，假美金也越来越多”（The wads of hell money being burned at the graves include both fake renminbi and，increasingly，fake US dollars.）。
在中国和中国的语境下：作为祭祀神灵或逝者的仿造纸钱，通常用于宗教仪式或葬礼。【In China and Chinese contexts: imitation paper money which is used as an offering to a god，spirit，or deceased person，typically at a religious ceremony or funeral】
OED以数学的等号明确指出，paper money就等于spirit money。同时，OED也在明显处标示，让读者自行参见hell money。

OED一共收录了四条paper money的书证，最近的一条出自2013年4月5日的英文《上海日报》（Shanghai Daily）：“[她]去墓园缅怀她父亲，在桂花树前焚烧纸钱，树下就埋著他的骨灰”（[She] went to a cemetery to commemorate her father by burning paper money in front of the osmanthus tree under which his ashes are buried.）。
牛津词典 [网络] Oxford Dictionaries; Oxford Dictionary; The Oxford Dictionary; Oxford;[例句]伍德指出，“selfie”（自拍）一词是《牛津词典》评出的年度新词。The word "selfie," wood points out, was the Oxford 。
鸡蛋里挑骨头。我请《上海日报》的友人查证后得知，这段书证虽然刊发于该报，不过事实上却是新华社的稿子，而且见报日期是4月3日，不是OED说的4月5日。
牛津词典是英国牛津大学出版社出版的多种英语词典的统称，是英国语言词典的代表。牛津词典共有20卷，它的存在更具有象征意义，象征着人类对知识无限的追求。《牛津现代英语高级学生词典》本是A.S.HORNBY等人1940年代在日本编写。
中国元素在OED的能见度仍然偏低，也少有新增。若有新增，也都是零星的个案，与当今的大国形象不成比例。有识之士或可群策群力，积极调研，以语料库支撑的真凭实据，向编辑部建议收录。化被动为主动，由消极的等待转为积极的建言，谁曰不可？
