今天是中国“烈士纪念日——Martyrs' Day”
古希腊和宗教中的Martyr
在罗马帝国的初期，也就是公元1世纪到3世纪，相当于中国历史上的东汉时期，罗马帝国治下的各地，曾多次对基督教进行迫害。在迫害中坚持信仰，而失去生命的信徒，就被教会称为martyr，中文译为“殉道士”。之后的一千多年，基督教内部多次发生教义冲突和教派分裂，各个教派都有信徒为维护信仰而失去生命，被封为martyr。
大约500年前，欧洲各国开始进入现代，宗教的影响力逐渐下降，martyr一词的使用也日益减少。但进入19世纪之后，martyr获得了新的含义，用来称呼那些为了争取平等、自由、独立等理想而牺牲生命的政治人物。今天英语中提到martyr时，已经很少用来指宗教中的“殉道士”，大多数情况，都是用来形容为了某项事业或信念，而受到迫害、失去生命的人，例如：a martyr to the cause of freedom为了自由事业而献身的志士
中文的“烈士”
现代中文的“烈士”这个说法，也是在进入现代之后才出现的。
今天是9月30日烈士纪念日（Martyrs&39;s Heroes）前，举行向人民英雄敬献花篮仪式（present flowers to deceased national heroes），缅怀英雄烈士。
