John Snow Defeats “King Cholera”

When a severe outbreak of cholera hit Europe,a big shadow was cast on John Snow,a gifted doctor. Later,in time,he attended Queen Victoria, but he never lost his initial desire to destroy cholera once and for all. Of the two abstract concepts,Snow subscribed to the second that cholera was caused by an infection from germs in food or water. He found multiple deaths near a water pump, while some households with free beer had no deaths. Snow suspected the water pump was to blame. With more solid and concrete proof,he announced there was a link between cholera and raw water. Accordingly,he had the pump handle removed. Through this defending intervention, the disease was stopped in its tracks. Thanks to John Snow’s findings, the world saw a steady substantial decrease in cholera. In his use of map tracing and statistics,Snow transformed the way scientists studied diseases.

The Scientists I admire

The two scientists I admire most are Qian Xuesen and Stephen Hawking. It was under Qian Xuesen’s outstanding leadership that China’s rocket science and missile program developed greatly. If Qian hadn’t shifted his major from mechanic to aviation,we would not have had such a patriotic “father of China’s aerospace”. As for Hawking whose work on the big bang theory was proven by astronomers with telescopes,I wonder what made a man who came down with a disease a genius. Besides being brilliant,he was brave, willing to dream of what others were afraid to dream about. Furthermore,he was quite determined. Above all,Hawking was willing to admit his faults. This odd combination of characteristics made him one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Studying Abroad

Is it a Good or bad idea?

Dear Editor。

As far as I’m concerned, the advantages of studying abroad are greater than its disadvantages. The first advantage is personal growth. You will gain more education and experiences, thus becoming more independent and competent. Another advantage is the increased change in cultural exchange. Chinese students serve as cultural envoys and strengthen the insight into both home and oversea cultures. Finally, studying abroad provides a great opportunity to contribute to the Chinese development. Generally speaking, many initiatives need more talents with mature skills and a global perspective and those students can meet these requirements and get better career opportunities. In summary, studying abroad helps to build character and increase people’s understanding of cultural diversity while strengthening China and building a shared future for all. I think this life-changing experience is worthwhile and I hope my child will study abroad in the future.

Sincerely yours

Zhang Yi (father of one boy)

CULTURE AND CUISINE

Eating is related to culture. Chinese cuisine is a case in point.

Prior to coming to China,I had some Chinese food with bold flavors and probably not from an authentic Chinese recipe, like General Tso’s chicken consisting of fried chicken. After arriving in Beijing,I experienced Sichuan peppercorns recommended by the chef. Then in Shandong Province, where the most famous food is pancake rolls stuffed with sliced Chinese green onions,I enjoyed boiled dumplings served with vinegar best. Later,I got a chance to taste lamb kebab,a traditional food of northern Xinjiang. After that,I travelled from South China to central China, experiencing dishes from Guangdong’s elegant dim sum to the exceptional stewed noodles in Henan.

HEALTHY EATING

Much of this extra sugar comes from sweets and sweet drinks. So,to keep healthy, you have to cut down on desserts, and cut out sweet drinks. Besides, you can consume different categories of fruit and vegetables full of vitamins and fiber, rather than processed foods with less nutrition but larger quantities of sugar than fresh ingredients. Also, having some meat, beans,or dairy products is important. As moderation is key,the ideal diet is a balanced one. Finally,a fundamental key is to eat slowly. Not chewing too quickly, consistent eating habits and a modest amount of food each time are good for your health.

Before they proceeded to Montreal,Daiyu and her cousin only had a few hours in Toronto,so they went on a tour of the city. Standing on the CN tower and looking into the distance, they were astonished to see misty clouds rising from the great Niagara Falls and water flowing to the sea. At dusk, they had dinner with Lin Fei,who told them about the influence of China on Canada. Saying goodbye to Toronto, they headed for Montreal, where they were surprised to see people there speak French and many speak English with an accent. While touring Montreal, they visited artists in their workplaces and chatted with a photographer, from whom they learned about the unique Quebec culture and traditions there. That night on the train bound for Halifax, they had a dream, anticipating the wonderful tour awaiting them. (148 words)

XU XIAKE'S GUILIN

I am travelling by raft down the Li River, following the footsteps of Xu Xiake, the famous Chinese travel writer and geographer, who spent over 30 years travelling throughout the country and making a careful study of Guilin’s karsts and the related cave systems. The Li River is surrounded by steep hills, which are unique karsts formed over thousands of years as rain drained into the acidic soil and melted the soft rock, leaving the harder rock behind. Our travelling down the Li River is full of adventures. This is exactly why Xu travelled far away from home: to explore the world and to discover new things. Nowadays, people are increasingly fond of traveling to go sightseeing, climb mountains or explore scenery. (122 words)

Skin, the largest organ of the body,is a barrier against toxins and rays and gives you your sense of touch. Therefore, applying first-aid techniques can avoid serious injuries from burns.

Burns are mainly caused by fire, radiation, acids, etc. There are three types of burns. First-degree burns, usually caused by minor incidents, only affect the top few millimeters of the skin. Going below the top layer of the skin,second-degree burns often go with swollen skin and blisters. Third-degree burns, like the ones caused by electric shocks, affect every layer of the skin.

Thirdly, remove clothes unless the fabric sticks to the burnt skin. Fourthly, cover the burnt area with a loose clean cloth. Fifthly, make sure the victim can breathe. Lastly,it is urgent to take the victim to the hospital immediately if he/she is suffering from second or third-degree burns.
